Canal & Train Ride Adventure

In the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel for your one-hour car ride towards the city of Colon, located on the Atlantic coast of Panama. First you will stop at the San Lorenzo Fort, a castle and fortress built by the Spaniards in 1598 to protect the entrance to the Chagres River from pirate attacks. The Chagres River was a very important waterway for the transportation of gold and many other goods from ocean to ocean, eventually ending up in Europe. This fortress was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO In 1980.

Afterwards, you will continue to the Canal Expansion’s Visitor Center and the Gatun Locks Visitor Center to observe the large ships passing through and for best views of the this megaproject. Here you will learn about the construction of the new locks of the Panama Canal, one of the most important infrastructure projects of the early 21st century, and about the modern challenges experienced during the construction process.

Then you will be driven to the train station to embark on your one-hour historic train ride back to Panama City. The railroad was built in 1850 to transport goods more quickly from ocean to ocean but the company went bankrupt in 1877 due to low income and demand. The railroad was later rebuilt in 1999, and since then, it has been an elemental tool in Canal logistics, transporting both people and supplies.

Upon arrival to the train station in Panama City, you will be met and transferred back to your hotel.
